Thanks to SHINE funding, patients from Northgate Park’s secure care wards were treated to a unique and awe-inspiring experience - a planetarium visit hosted by Kielder Observatory.
In total, 22 patients from medium and low secure services participated in the sessions. They were taken on a guided journey through the stars, learning about planets, constellations, and celestial phenomena, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions and engage in discussion.
The impact on patient wellbeing was immediately evident. Feedback on the day was overwhelmingly positive, with comments such as “this is great,” “I wish it was longer,” and “I’m pleased I came, I’m really interested in the sky.” For many, it was their first time experiencing anything like it—and for some, it sparked a new interest in astronomy. Several patients with leave expressed a desire to visit Kielder Observatory in person to explore further activities.

The event was not only educational but also therapeutic, helping patients broaden their horizons and inspiring curiosity about the universe - reminding us all of the power of new experiences to support recovery and wellbeing.
