A simple idea born from compassion has grown into a hospital-wide project supporting patients with access to essential toiletries when they need them most.

A couple of years ago, Becky, a Nursing Assistant at Hopewood Park, and her colleague Aly launched a small toiletry project after seeing firsthand how many patients arrive on wards with little more than the clothes they are wearing.

Hopewood Park in Ryhope provides a range of inpatient and community mental health services, including rehabilitation wards and services for older people.

The pair recognised that some patients do not have the financial means to purchase everyday essentials, while others can feel uncomfortable or embarrassed about asking for basic items.

Reflecting on why the project began, Becky said:

“One moment that has always stayed with me was when a patient felt embarrassed to ask for a toothbrush and shower gel. Nobody should ever have to feel embarrassed about needing something so essential.”

What started as a collection for their own ward quickly expanded when other wards across the site began getting in touch to ask whether any spare toiletries were available.

“That’s when I realised this could hopefully become something bigger,” Becky said.

Today, donations are shared between wards across Hopewood Park, helping to ensure patients have access to items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant and sanitary products. For Becky, the impact of the project goes far beyond the toiletries themselves.

The project also helps reduce pressure on ward staff, who can spend valuable time trying to source essential items for patients in need.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters, the initiative continues to make a meaningful difference to patients across Hopewood Park, ensuring that access to everyday essentials helps promote comfort, confidence and dignity during their stay.
